Thesis award regulations The complete text can be found below, but you can also download the regulations here. Regulations Anéla-VIOT thesis award 2008-2009 1. Every year, the Dutch Association for Applied Linguistics (Anéla) and the Interuniversitary Association for Language Competence (VIOT) will award a prize to the best thesis in the field of language acquisition, language education or language use. The thesis needs to have been written at a Dutch institute of higher education and been approved during the academic year prior to the awarding of the prize, i.e. between 1 September 2008 and 1 September 2009. 2. The winner is awarded with €500. 3. Anéla and VIOT members are asked to recommend a maximum of two theses (that have been written under the supervision of the Anéla or VIOT member in question or under the supervision of someone else). Submission of a recommendation can be done by filling in a form. This form needs to be signed by the person submitting the recommendation and the author of the thesis. The submission needs to contain the reasons for recommendation and the thesis study load. Additionally, an abstract of maximally half a page A4 needs to be added, anticipating the presentation of the thesis at the Anéla-VIOT Junior Conference Day in Leiden on January 16th 2010. The forms can be downloaded from http://www.anela.nl/ > scriptieprijs or directly from this site. The recommended theses (printed, in triplicate, black/white sufficient) and the complete filled-in form need to be in possession of Anneke Smits (Secretariat Anéla) (for address see recommendation form), official secretary of the Anéla Board. She will send all received recommendations to the jury members, and the abstracts to the organising committee of the Anéla-VIOT Junior Conference Day. Candidates for the thesis award are eligible to receive a contribution of max. 15-20 euro as a compensation for the costs of printing three copies of their thesis. A request for that with accompanying receipt needs to be attached to the forms. 4. The recommended theses are expected to clearly contribute to the field of applied linguistics. This can involve a report of one’s own original research, but also a discussion of research leading to new insights. If none of the recommended theses meets these demands, the prize will not be awarded. 5. The prize will be awarded by a jury that has been appointed by both the Anéla and VIOT boards. Catherine van Beuningen, board member of Anéla, will act as official secretary, but will intrinsically not be part of the jury. If a jury member has been involved as a supervisor for one or more recommendations, he/she will abstain from voting on the recommendation(s) in question. 6. The jury elects one of its members as chairperson. The jury is not responsible to (the board of) the association, but will be expected to comply with these regulations. The jury is free to call in experts. The jury will draw up a written report, in which the choice of nominees and the winner is explained. The report will be read out at the awarding ceremony during the Anéla-VIOT Junior Conference Day, in Leiden on January 29th 2010. After the awarding ceremony, the report will be sent to the board and distributed via the newsletter amongst Anéla and VIOT members. In addition, the jury report is placed on both the Anéla and the VIOT websites. 7. The students who have been recommended for the thesis award are expected to give a talk about their thesis research on the Anéla-VIOT Junior Conference Day. The jury will announce the names of a maximum of five nominees to the Anéla and VIOT boards at the beginning of November 2009. For the nominees, it is compulsory to present their thesis research during the Anéla-VIOT Junior Conference Day. Furthermore, the nominees are expected to write a paper on their presentation and submit it to be published in the journal Toegepaste Taalwetenschap in Artikelen (TTWiA). 17 November 2009 at the latest, the nominees will be informed by the Anéla and VIOT boards of their nomination.
